Solve multi-step problems involving all four operations:
Problem solving is ongoing throughout the year. Students practiced the Modeled Drawing visual approach to problem solving in second and third grade. We will continue to develop this technique as well as other strategies when problem solving. The modeled drawing technique combines strategies for reading a math problem with using a strip diagram in order to choose an operation so that the student will be able to correctly solve the problem.
Below are the arithmetic skills the kids need to master or become proficient in, so that they can use the skills to solve everyday problems.
Place Value
Estimation/Rounding
Addition/Subtraction to billions
Multiplication
Multiplication with larger numbers
Division
Measurement
Fractions
Decimals
Graphs and Functions
Geometry
Financial Literacy
Math facts quizzes— we will transition to reviewing x/÷ facts soon. Students need to practice their basic math facts to stay proficient. The quiz order will be x2 (double), x4 (double again), x5, x10, x11, squares (doubles for multiplication, 4x4), review of the previous facts, x3, x9, x12, x6 & combined, and lastly x7. The order for our review follows mathematical patterns starting with the easier facts so that when students get to more challenging facts, most of those would've been mastered earlier through the easier facts.
